Blech.
I came down with a cold on Tuesday. I think I picked it up from someone over the weekend. Blech. I've had my share of colds already this season, I don't want another. Arg.

When are you crazy scientists going to come up with a cure for this thing?!

Colds are _hard_. Flu is simple by comparison. Sorry.

About the time your crazy immune system figures out how to handle things more efficiently?

"When are you crazy scientists going to come up with a cure for this thing?!"

Which thing? There's gazillions of them, all different!

Basically, "a cold" is your body's defense strategy against any invader that employs certain strategies of invasion and attack. This is why you get cold symptoms as part of fighting 'flu, amongst others. It mostly works, too! When did you last die of a cold infection? =:o} And the milder cold viruses are probably our best defense against a global killer 'flu pandemic occuring (competition).

The only general-purpose solution I can imagine is to build an artificial human airway, that behaves exactly like the real thing, but sits in front of our real airway as a decoy and a filter. Or, genetically engineer our species so that the defense mechanisms are placed further away from vulnerable areas like the lungs and brain, and have more opportunity to take effect. We'd also need to make them more energy efficient, or arrange some permanent reservoir of energy to be released whenever a potential infection is detected, to prevent that tired and washed-out feeling we get during and after the battle. A safe reservoir in which to deposit the mucus-trapped invaders, rather than sneezing them back out over everyone else, would be a nice feature. And a silencer, for when "flush the system with air" becomes the only option.

Expect the people of the 22nd century to all have ant-eater type noses with built-in battery packs and easily changeable sneeze-bags. "We've cured the common cold!" =:o>

In the meantime: Get better soon.

I like the idea of the decoy respiratory system. :)

You've met Seanan, right?

Do you _really_ want to see what tags along w/ a cure for the common cold? :-)

(Feel better soon! You must get well so you can hopefully not pick up con crud all over again at Duck!)

There is a cure! It's called abstinence.

Oh, wait. Wrong virus.

Two words: Zinc and Echinacea. Oh, and Vitamin C (well, four words, sorta)

Take care of you!

I'm visualizing you getting enough sleep and breathing freely. When I see you in two weeks, I can kiss your no-longer-stuffy nose and make it better in person.

Meanwhile, I'm sure if you ask sweetly, your own personal scientist will make soup again.

I don't work at Symantec.

Roseanne! He meant a _cold_ virus.

He did? Never mind.
