Wayward show this weekend! We're back, at the one and only Browncoat epicenter of Seattle, Saturday, March 23rd, 2013 at 7pm, joined by the amazing Betsy and Sunnie!

And then there's Norwescon the following weekend! We're doing a Thing with Molly Lewis this year! For those of you who were able to attend her awesome Graduation Party Concert last summer, then you know what fun you're in for. And for those who missed it, here's your chance to experience what Molly sounds like with a band behind her! Come see it on the Saturday night of Norwescon!

Special announcement! Norwescon PARTY CAR!
Our friend Hello, The Future! is playing Friday night at Norwescon and then playing the following Saturday evening at Wayward. That makes it hard for folks to be able to see her at Wayward and also see the fun events at Norwescon on Saturday night. So she's getting carpools together to go to Wayward and back on Saturday, so you can go to the con, and catch both her at Wayward and the Molly/Vixy/Tony/Betsy/Sunnie thing at Norwescon on the same night! She's got seats in two cars available as of this writing, so Send and email to nicole@hello-the-future.net with the subject PARTY CAR to join in!

ECCC!

We're gearing up for ECCC this weekend! Are you all excited? Hey, remember last year when we did that awesome and fun thing with those people? There's a chance we might do it (or some similar subset of it) again this year, too. If we do, there's a chance it might happen on Sunday, so if you want to witness it, you must keep your eyes on each of our various Twitter feeds to see if that's something that's going to happen!

Next weekend, I'll be playing guitar for Marian Call on Saturday and Sunday, March 9th and 10th, check her web site for all the details.

And another reminder that we're back at Wayward on Saturday, March 23rd, 2013 at 7pm, with Betsy and Sunnie!

I had a lot of fun working with Betsy and Sunnie on this one. If you're wondering what our second album is going to sound like, this is a taste of how the songs are sounding in the studio with our string section. Please comment below and let us know what you think of this new version of the song!

A note about how Bandcamp handles downloads: We want the song to be free to download, however, Bandcamp only lets 200 people download a free song per calendar month, after that, it switches to paid. So what we've done is put the song up as a name-your-own-price song, and if you want to be one of those 200 people, put in zero for your price. If you want to let someone else be one of those 200 people, put in something for the price. At least, I think that's how it works. Please let us know if you encounter any problems with Bandcamp.

Aaaaaand.... We're gearing up for two shows on the next two weekends!

We've got shows coming up! And they're both Browncoat shows!

Our first show coming up is Shiny Happy Holidays, in Santa Monica, on the night of Saturday December 8th, and it's four acts in one evening: Hello, The Future!, Eben Brooks Logan Heftel, and of course, Vixy & Tony! There will also be an auction and other things! This is going to be a great show, but we don't know anyone in LA, so we need your help boosting the signal! Please tweet and blog and facebook about this show so that everyone in LA knows about it!

Our second show this December will be on the afternoon of Sunday, December 16th at 2:30pm, as part of GeekFest! We'll be playing with our beloved Betsy and Sunnie, in a massive theater with tons of space! Other acts for the weekend include the aforementioned Hello, The Future! and Eben Brooks, as well as the hard rocking Kirby Krackle, the comedy of Nerdprov, and other amazing acts! Geekfest runs all weekend, and they'll be putting up their final schedule at their web site soon! Get your tickets now, bring all your friends, and let's fill the place up!

Both of December's shows are put on by Browncoat organizations (CA and Seattle), and both of them benefit their favorite charities. What better way to spend time in December?

In the meantime, I'm closing in on the final mix of our re-record of No Hurry, and it's wonderful, it's full of Betsy and Sunnie goodness, you'll love it! And we're going to release it for free! Very soon now!

Back home safe from OVFF! As we were flying Westward from Chicago, we could see the wall of cloud from the approaching edge of the storm system surrounding hurricane Sandy. I hope that all of our friends on the East coast are safe and dry! Chime in and let us know how you're doing.

Tonight, we're going to be rehearsing with Betsy for our concert at Orycon this weekend, we're really looking forward to it! Who's coming?

But finally! Details about the December 8th Browncoat show in LA! We're calling it Shiny Happy Holidays, and it's a collection of four great musical acts, an auction, and other stuff! From the Interfilk auction at OVFF

Well, OVFF is being awesome this weekend so far. There was a somewhat difficult travel day to get here, where we arrived at the flight gate to depart and they had closed the airplane door seven minutes prior. But the helpful United agents rebooked us on a flight that got us here just barely before the Pegasus concert started, and everything came off smoothly. Vixy was a bit frazzled around the edges, and had to retire early on Friday night, but things are looking good for the filk circles tonight so far.

In particular, it was nice to meet Hello, The Future! in person and see her perform, there's going to be a lot more of her in our sphere of attention coming up in December, where we'll be doing GeekFest with her on the 15th and an LA show on the 8th (details still pending on that one).

But of course, the big news is the Pegasus Awards, and it was a great banquet and ceremony, with, amazingly, two tie awards:

Why we love Betsy and Sunnie

We're getting packed to head off to OVFF this weekend. And I'm really sad that Betsy and Sunnie can't come. But! I got to work with them in the studio last weekend, and WOW, were they awesome.

They're the kind of players that you can just sit in front of a microphone and magic comes out. They came up with the most delightful parts, laying down something like six tracks total in just a few hours. I don't ever try to write parts for them to play, they are just so wonderful at coming up with beautiful material on their own. That means that when I record them on a song, it will always have their distinctive signatures and creativity baked right in. That just thrills me, because it means that in the end, the song takes on new textures that I didn't even know were there. I feel so honored that they enjoy doing that for our songs. And I love them dearly.

Coming up, Vixy & Tony & Betsy are playing a concert at Orycon very soon, with Katie opening. There's GeekFest in December, and keep an eye on our schedule this weekend for details about the LA show on December 8th!

We're getting ready for Archon this weekend! We've got two concerts planned out, one on Friday evening and one on Saturday afternoon, in two different locations. Panels and Filk circles too! Peek at the convention's programming grid for all the details.

We're going to go to OVFF as regular attendees in a couple of weeks, then after that it's Orycon at the beginning of November.

Then, in December, there will be GeekFest in Seattle, and a Browncoat holiday show in LA on December 8th! (Details about the LA show coming soon!)

We're back at Wayward! And... GEEKFEST!

Hey everybody! We're back at Wayward! It's Sereniversary this weekend! We'll play some music, Broenwynn will do some Whedon trivia, and there will be a Firefly costume contest with prizes! Are you coming? Who will you be dressing as?

Also: There might (depending on a couple of IF's) be something Jade at the merch table! Crossing our fingers!

In the meantime, in the studio, we're re-recording No Hurry to fix a lyric issue, and simultaneously take advantage of the opportunity to add additional awesome to the song. We'll offer it up for free download once it's done!

And just announced! Coming up in December, there will be GeekFest again! This time, it'll be a whole weekend! The music is going to be amazing! There will be us, of course, with a healthy dose of Betsy and Sunnie. But that's not all! We've got the clever quirky fun of Hello, The Future!, the hilarious parody stylings of Eben Brooks, geek music by Afraid of Figs, comedy by NerdProv, and the amazing, full-band, rock-your-face-off, dance-the-night-away antics of Kirby Krackle!

WHEW! Okay! Coming up? Well, there's still our Filk GOH slot at Archon 36, October 12th, We're doing a concert at Orycon on November 3rd, and we are still trying to put something together in LA in December! Maybe a browncoaty thing on or about the date of December 8th, with Hello, The Future!, Eben Brooks, and others. Who's free on that day?

Ashes of Worldcon

Wow, it's been a crazy, mad weekend at Chicon 7, we saw hilarious and amazing things happen all weekend, and had a huge amount of fun playing to a packed room in three different concerts with our friends. Seanan and Cat won their first Hugos in the Best Fancast category, and we had fun filking on Friday and Sunday nights. Thank you, everyone who came to our concerts and bought our CDs! Coming up, we're doing another one of the awesomely fun book release parties for Seanan at Borderlands Books in San Francisco. It's when? It's THIS COMING WEEKEND?! We're still at Worldcon! Who makes these schedules?! (oh right, it's me.) Anyway, details are all here. Who's coming?

Geek + Girl + Con = Awesome

After a period of quiet time (after the three intense shows in a row we did last month), it looks like it's time to post here again! Thanks, everyone who came to those shows and made them magical and fun. Westercon was especially fun because we got to hang out with our friends Jeff and Maya, and watch them just kill at the masquerade half time.

Did anyone get video of us doing Peppercrumb, the full rock treatment, with Betsy and Sunnie on awesome distorted electric guitars (aka sul ponticello), and Jeff and Kris and Jen and Marcos on signage? That was so fun!

Oh! Everyone make sure to go see our friends Ship of Dreams play at Wayward this weekend!

What's up next? Well, how about our concert with The Doubleclicks at Geek Girl Con coming up very soon! You all know The Doubleclicks by now, right? The amazing take-the-world-by-storm duo from Portland who are as charming as they are clever? Well, then you know how awesome they are, and that you cannot miss them when they come to Seattle, and of course you already have your tickets to Geek Girl Con already, right?

And then, what's next after that? Well...

We might even cook up something in LA in December! Anyone hail from LA and would be interested in hearing us play down there? Speak up now!

I can die happy now.

It's all over now, and even though it's been almost two days at this point, I'm still reeling from the awesome and replaying every little bit in my mind over and over again. Molly's show was everything I'd hoped it would be and more. Thank you Molly, Liz, and everyone at The Triple Door for having us, and thank you Betsy and Sunnie for being the best string section we could ever hope for. You two really shine, and it's always an honor to play with you. And a huge high five to Jason Finn for giving everything a level of precision and energy that we wouldn't have gotten anywhere else. But most of all, thank you Vixy, for making my dreams come true once again.

There are some good shakycam videos going up now, so give those a look. At the moment, my favorites are these two: An Open Letter to Stephen Fry and My Bioluminescent Boy. ~~I'm still waiting for someone to post video of "Sell Out", the big closing number.~~ And I've heard that they're ~~planning to soon~~ post on YouTube the original versions of the interstitial "Behind the Music" videos that they produced for the show. Those of you who were there are probably dying to show them to your friends who couldn't make it to the show; ~~hopefully soon~~ you'll be able to.

Cue 80's movie montage in 3... 2... 1...

It's now less than a week until the Massive Molly Lewis Graduation Nerdstock Variety Show of Huge Amazingness. According to the web site, they've got a handful of seats left, after which, they open it up to Standing Room Only tickets. So now's the time to grab your seats! Remember, they serve dinner at The Triple Door, and the food is from Wild Ginger and it's delicious, so come early and order food! Doors open at 6:30pm, and the show is at 8.

The show lineup is settling in nicely, and includes Marian Call, The Doubleclicks, Jason Finn, Kris Straub and Stepto, in addition to Molly of course. I'm still unclear on how this is all going to come together, but I have faith that Dammit Liz has it all under control. Vixy & Tony, with the amazing Betsy and Sunnie at our side (natch) are going to be part of Molly's and Marian's backup bands for a smattering of songs, and squeeze in something of our own! There are other surprises coming, too!

To whet your appetite, Jade Gordon made some amazing poster art for the show, based on an 80's movie that we love very dearly. (Hint: Finn is the odd man out, depicted as a character from a completely different 80's movie.) And as if that weren't enough, Jade drew some Vixy & Tony fan art, clearly having heard the story behind Companion before. Not only that, she depicted Vixy with hair color that she's only had for a day. I think I make a good Nine, don't you?

Is that enough? No, it's not! Because we have other shows coming up in the following two weeks! Hey, who planned this schedule?! Are they crazy?! (Answer: Yes. Yes we are.) Okay, we've got:

House Cerulia Concert on Sunday, July 1st at 4pm, with Ship of Dreams opening!
Then, we are the Special Filk Guests at Westercon 2012, right here in Seattle!
And if that weren't enough, we've got some great stuff coming up in the late summer and fall, including Archon in St. Louis and Geek Girl Con here in Seattle! More details to come!

Graduation party!

You're all coming to the Vixy & Tony Show at Wayward tomorrow, right? Great! We're really going to rock the place, and it's going to be awesome, so make sure you don't miss it! Okay, now that we've got that out of the way, there's something else I've been dying to talk about, and now I finally can...

Way back in the ancient days of 2008, I went to a particularly swank theater to see a favorite performer play. It was a magical night of music, laughter, great food, great atmosphere, and absolute joy. And right in the middle of it all, someone new and unexpected: A songwriter with a ukulele steps out onstage to play a single song. She's alone, it's her first solo performance, she's slightly overwhelmed by the audience and the environment, you can hear the tiniest edge of nervousness in her voice, but that song and its performance are delightful, and the audience is completely won over. She's clever, funny, genuine, and clearly one of the best songwriters you'll ever hear. In the coming months, I listened intently to every new song she put up on YouTube, each one reinforcing my belief that she was destined for greatness. Others who were making music in the same genre clearly agreed, and began inviting her to play in their shows at every opportunity.

Vixy & I have since had the opportunity to meet Molly Lewis, and even play one or two small gigs with her, thanks to our mutual friend Marian Call. And just over a month ago, Molly asked us if we'd like to be part of something special she was planning. I'm particularly excited about this, because not only is this thing happening at the same theater I first saw her perform in, but it's the one theater I've been dreaming that Vixy & I would someday get to play in. It's one of the most gorgeous, comfortable, and civilized settings to watch a show in, and I have thoroughly enjoyed every show I've seen there.

So here's what's happening. Molly is graduating college next month. One of the things she's considering for a career is doing the thing that everyone around her thinks she's already great at: Writing and playing songs. So far, she's mostly been the "with special guest" at shows with her various musical alumni. But on June 24th, Molly will be headlining a graduation-party show at The Triple Door. This is a big deal, people. She can't yet say who all is coming to play because some of it is still in-the-works, but the invitee list is large, because Molly has a lot of friends.

And yes, Vixy & Tony will be there, Betsy and Sunnie at our side. Not yet sure what exactly we're going to do, but we'll come up with something. This is a special night, after all.

Thank you so much, everyone, who came out to see us play with The Doubleclicks in Portland! We had a blast! Do you like their new album? As birthday gift earlier this month, I got their full elite fan package, which meant I got to pick up all my stuff at the show, including this awesome iron-on patch. "Music hath charms to soothe the savage geek." How cool is that?

There are all sorts of great things afoot, some of which I can't post about yet, but suffice it to say it's going to be a great summer. In the meantime,this Coming Saturday, we are back at Wayward! I've been told it's important that we don't mislead you into thinking that this is a Cinco de Mayo party. I know, I know, you wanted to hear us play our vast back catalog of traditional Mexican folk tunes, but alas, that is not to be. Instead, we shall just have our usual blast of a time! This particular blast will include Betsy and Sunnie, who will, most emphatically, not be dressed as Mariachis. We promise.

Norwescon was amazing!

Norwescon was just fantastic! A big thank you to everyone who came to our concert and packed the room, and of course, thanks everyone else who stayed for The Doubleclicks right afterward! Weren't they awesome? We spent so much energy on the concert, that Vixy ended up pumpkining immediately afterwards, so we had to miss open filk (sorry). We both seem to have come down with something and ended up staying home from work and being lumps today, but it's helping.

Bonus: Here are cellphone camera videos of our entire set if you didn't get a chance to make it on Saturday. Thank you, Elspeth!

Another awesome thing that happened at Norwescon is that Torrey won Best in Class and Best Workmanship for the Master class at the Masquerade. The costume was a carefully hand-sewn and hand-dyed replica of this dress including a complex wig and hand-constructed jewelry and beading. Here is a video of her presentation during the masquerdade (updated, better quality). (Edit: And here are some Flickr shots of the finished costume, and even more here.) We are so very proud of her!

Coming up, we've got an exciting piece of news for you PDX fans: Vixy and Tony will be opening for The Doubleclicks at their CD release party, Saturday, April 28th, at Backspace Cafe in Portland! Everyone who asks us when we're gonna play Portland, well, the answer is, Saturday the 28th! Come see us!

After that, we're back at Wayward on Cinco De Mayo!

Now it's time for Norwescon! The Vixy & Tony concert time and location is still holding steady at Saturday, April 7th, at 9pm in Evergreen 1&2, with Sunnie and Betsy in da house, followed by The Doubleclicks at 10. I'm very excited about this weekend!

Kracklefest, ECCC, and Norwescon!

I just got done with a great rehearsal with Marian Call! I will be playing guitar for her at Kracklefest, this Friday night at the Hard Rock Cafe. You have got to come to this thing, it's going to be epic.

Then, the next day (this Saturday), Marian, The Doubleclicks, and me and Vixy will all be at the massive Emerald City Comic-Con! Marian will be signing her spectacular new album at the Alaska Robotics booth. Meanwhile, Vixy and I will be doing a signing session at the PDX Browncoats booth in the foyer at 11am, followed by The Doubleclicks at Noon. Come by and say hi! And keep your eyes on each of our various Twitter feeds during the con, because we're hoping to scheme up a bit of surprise music somewhere around the con if we can find a good spot and a good time. (Shhh.)

And then, just a week after ECCC, we'll have the always-magnificent Norwescon! And of course it wouldn't be a Norwescon without a Vixy & Tony Concert! This one will be Saturday, April 7th, at 9pm in Evergreen 1&2. We will be joined by Sunnie and Betsy, of course! And a special treat: At 10, we'll be followed by The Doubleclicks! (They swapped nights with Kirby Krackle, who was originally scheduled in that slot; now KK is playing on Friday night instead.) Soulfood Show!

Everyone who lives under a rock (like me), remember, there is a DST change happening on Saturday night, and that always confuses the heck out of me, so it's our plan to start the show randomly either one hour early, one hour late, or perhaps exactly on time, depending on how you choose to set your clock. I guess what I'm saying is, don't arrive late, DST wasn't our idea, it was Ben Franklin's, bless his heart.

The show is going to be great! Betsy and Sunnie will be with us! And it's very important to us that everyone in our area who hasn't yet seen The Doubleclicks gets a chance to see them. There is no charge for tickets, but please put a big donation in the jar to help them pay for their gas money! They've told me that the fuller the jar gets, the funnier their songs get. It's true!

Vixy & Tony and The Doubleclicks!

It's Saturday at Consonance, and things are going great. Vixy and I have gotten to play backup in a few concerts, but for the most part, this has been a relaxing "Just go and enjoy the con" weekend for us, which is a bit of a treat for us both. We're seeing lots of friends and being quite entertained. Those of you who are here with us: What's your favorite part of the weekend been? So far, my favorite moment has been me and Gwen breaking into the fast bluegrass version of Stairway during sound check, with Seanan being completely oblivious, bless her classic-rock-starved heart.

After we get back from Consonance, we're going to be doing a show in Redmond with The Doubleclicks, on Monday, March 12th, 7pm. We're really looking forward to this show! For those Vixy & Tony fans who haven't had a chance to see this funny and charming duo from Portland yet, please come to this show! (If you already have seen them, you've already made plans to come by now, I'm sure, so I don't need to ask you to come.) If you're a Doubleclicks fan and you haven't seen Vixy & Tony yet, well, HI THERE and have a listen and I hope we'll see you in Redmond!

Upcoming gigs!

Hey, wow, look at that, a bunch of entries in our Band Calendar! I'm going just to list them all here. Something worth noting: Vixy and I have been working on new songs, so some of these upcoming shows might feature them. Just thought you'd like to know.

Vixy & Tony playing at Wayward Coffeehouse, This Coming Saturday, February 18th, 8pm. We have always loved playing at Wayward-That-Was, and the new Wayward in Seattle's Ravenna district is even more awesome! We're very excited to be coming back again. This is going to be a scaled-down show, with just me and Vixy, since Sunnie and Betsy are now pursuing solo careers. (Just kidding, Betsy is playing with Sooj back East and Sunnie had a previous commitment.)

Vixy & Tony and The Doubleclicks at Soulfood Books, Monday, March 12th, 7pm. We're super excited to be sharing the stage with the hilarious and charming Doubleclicks, in their first appearance at Soulfood Books in Redmond. You've seen The Doubleclicks, right, and you love their deadpan wit and hyper-clever hyper-geeky songs? If you haven't seen them yet, well, you're in for a treat. We all know that Soulfood is the awesome place to play, so everyone please come out on this school night, and prove it to The Doubleclicks, so they'll want to come back! Show runs from 7-9pm so you can still be back home and in bed at a decent hour. By the way, this show will include Sunnie and Betsy, back again from their travels. (We missed you!)

Vixy & Tony Concert at Norwescon, Saturday, April 7th. We're back at Norwescon to rock the house down, joined by Sunnie and Betsy. Norwescon keeps getting more awesome every year! Check out this year's incredible music lineup, including the aforementioned Doubleclicks on Friday, and Kirby Krackle on Saturday. We don't yet know what times of day that everyone will be playing, so check the convention schedule carefully after you register.

Vixy & Tony play Cinco de Mayo at Wayward, Saturday, May 5th, 8pm. And, we're back! At Wayward! I can almost guarantee that our set list will be entirely free of traditional Mexican folk music! But you never know with us. We get Sunnie and Betsy for this one, so come have a string-section-infused blast with us!

Vixy & Tony, Westercon 2012 Special Filk Guests, Weekend of July 7th. We're the Special Filk Guests at Westercon 2012 right here in Seattle! We have no idea what time or day of the convention that we'll be playing yet, so check the con schedule when you arrive!

Vixy & Tony, Filk Guests of Honor, Archon 2012, St. Louis, Weekend of October 13th. This will be our first time guesting at Archon, where we will apparently somehow be in St. Louis, Missouri, by actually being in Collinsville, Illinois. Hey, don't ask me how it works, I was always terrible with geography in school. Again, it's a con, so, we still have no idea when/where we'll play until we get there. And then we'll know, and then it will get changed probably. But that's what makes cons fun!

PHEW! That's a lot of stuff on our calendar, and it's our hope to add more as 2012 continues, so keep checking back!

Conflikt was awesome! And we finally got to play there! YAY! Everyone was great, the concerts and circles were all awesome, and we had a fantastic time. Betsy got to play cello in the majority of concerts including her own (natch). It was especially fun to see Talis Kimberley, who played all our favorites, and made Vixy cry.

Speaking of which, Talis Kimberly has a local gig TONIGHT!! Soulfood Books, 7pm, don't miss it! You've heard us and Seanan cover her songs for years now (remember "Archetype Cafe" and "Still Catch the Tide"?), but since she lives in England, it's hard for most of us to get to her gigs. Tonight is your one rare chance to see her in person, on US soil!

And now, we rest!

NO WAIT! No rest for us! because we're we're playing at Wayward again, February 18th! We're so excited that we get to come play at our old haunt again. We missed Wayward for so long, we're so glad it's back!
